Beautiful Bioluminescence

It's an incredible treat to see these organisms light up the water on dark nights. Whether it's an animal disturbing the water, or us to causing these guys to light up, it's a spectacular show. I've borrowed the definition from Wikipedia since honestly, I didn't know how to technically describe what was going on to my kids the first time we saw them. The next day I had the kids do a little research which was fun. I love how science comes to life while living on a sailboat and exploring new places. 

Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. It is a form of chemiluminescence. Bioluminescence occurs widely in marine vertebrates and invertebrates
